Furniture Spacing Calculator: Gaps & Walkways
Work out the recommended spacing for your living room furniture: the gap between the sofa and the coffee table, the walkway behind chairs, and the viewing distance for your television.
How this calculator works
Recommended spacing is based on standard design guidance. Leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table, so legs and cups fit comfortably. Leave 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, and at least 24 inches to pass behind a chair. Keep conversation seating no more than about 8 feet apart. TV viewing distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size. These are general guidance figures for typical homes.

Frequently asked questions
How far should the coffee table be from the sofa?
14 to 18 inches. Closer and knees hit the table; further and you cannot reach a drink without leaning forward.
How much space do I need to walk around furniture?
30 to 36 inches for main walkways, and at least 24 inches to pass behind a chair.
How far should I sit from the TV?
1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal screen size. For a 55-inch TV that is about 7 to 11.5 feet.
How far apart should living room chairs be?
No more than about 8 feet from the sofa, or conversation becomes shouting. Chairs angled toward the sofa feel closer.
