Rug Size Calculator: Find the Right Rug for Your Room
A rug that is too small is the most common decorating mistake. This calculator recommends a rug size based on your furniture, using the standard rule that the front legs of the seating should sit on the rug.
How this calculator works
The recommendation uses the standard rule that the front legs of the seating should sit on the rug, and that the rug should be at least 8 to 12 inches wider than the main furniture on each side. For a dining room, the rug must be large enough for chairs to stay on it when pulled out, which means the table size plus 24 inches on each side. Sizes are given in feet with metric equivalents.

Frequently asked questions
What size rug do I need for a living room?
Large enough for the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it, usually 8 by 10 feet for a three-seat sofa. Leave 8 to 12 inches of bare floor between the rug and the wall.
Should a rug be bigger than the sofa?
Yes, at least 8 to 12 inches wider than the sofa on each side, so the front legs sit on it and the rug anchors the furniture.
How big should a bedroom rug be?
Large enough to extend 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides of the bed. For a queen bed that is usually 8 by 10 feet, placed under the lower two thirds of the bed.
Is it better to buy a rug too big or too small?
Too big. A rug that is slightly too big looks better than a rug that is slightly too small.
