Tile Calculator: How Many Tiles Do I Need?

Work out how many tiles you need for a floor or a wall, including a waste allowance for cuts and breakages. Enter the area and the tile size, and the calculator gives you the number of tiles to buy.

How this calculator works

Tiles needed is the area divided by the area of one tile, multiplied by one plus the waste allowance. A waste allowance of 10 percent suits a rectangular area; allow 12 to 15 percent for a diagonal layout, a patterned tile, or a room with many corners. Always round up to the next whole tile, and then to the next whole box, and keep spare tiles for repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need?

Divide the area by the area of one tile, and add a waste allowance, usually 10 percent for a rectangular area and 12 to 15 percent for a diagonal layout.

What is the waste allowance for tiles?

10 percent is standard. Allow more for diagonal layouts, patterned tiles, and areas with many corners or obstacles.

Should I buy extra tiles?

Yes. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs, because tile batches can vary in colour and may not be available later.

How do I measure for tiles?

Measure the length and width of the area, multiply them for the area, and divide by the area of one tile. For an L-shaped area, split it into rectangles.
